The Grain Boundary Wetting Phenomena in the Ti-Containing High-Entropy Alloys: A Review

In this review, the phenomenon of grain boundary (GB) wetting by melt is analyzed for multicomponent alloys without principal components (also called high-entropy alloys or HEAs) containing titanium. GB wetting can be complete or partial. In the former case, the liquid phase forms the continuous layers between solid grains and completely separates them. In the latter case of partial GB wetting, the melt forms the chain of droplets in GBs, with certain non-zero contact angles. The GB wetting phenomenon can be observed in HEAs produced by all solidification-based technologies. Continuous Yb:YAG laser beam was shaped into double spot tandem and defocalized to cover larger interaction zone in V shaped groove. In this paper, a critical analysis of the technical difficulties and numerical issues in running simulations of linear friction welding processes is carried out. Friction Stir Welding (FSW) is a solid state welding process patented in 1991 by TWI; initially adopted to weld aluminum alloys, is now being successfully used also for high resistant materials. Welding of titanium alloys by traditional fusion welding techniques presents several difficulties due to high material reactivity resulting in bonding with oxygen, hydrogen, and nitrogen with consequent embrittlement of the joint. NiTi spring coils were used to obtain large deformation under a constant force. The device consists on a NiTi coil spring, superelastic at body temperature, in order to have a stress plateau during the austenitic retransformation during the unloading. In the paper a continuum based FEM model for Friction Stir Welding of different material lap joint made out of thin stainless steel and titanium sheets is proposed. The simulation campaign was made out using the 3D Lagrangian implicit code DEFORM{trade mark, serif} by means of a rigid-visco-plastic approach.
